Floor Cloths by Cinda Sue Dow

What are Floor Cloths?
Floor cloths are decorative floor coverings used in place of rugs, and are one of mankind's earliest floor coverings with an origin dating back more than 200 years. Floor cloths are sturdy and functional - hand-crafted from durable canvas, painted with vibrant acrylics, and finished with protective sealants. These decorative pieces add a unique focal point to entries and other high-traffic areas.

Care and Use
The floor cloth is well suited for any room with a hard floor such as wood, linoleum, concrete and some types of tile.  Floor cloths are not suitable for use over carpet, as the floor cloth would form to the carpet and cause the painted surface to bend repeatedly.

For information about installing, cleaning , and maintaining your floor cloth, please read the Installation and Maintenance section at the bottom of this page.

Installation
When installing your floor cloth, vacuum well and damp mop your floor, as any small dirt particle can “show” through. Place a good quality rubber rug mat in the desired floor cloth location, unroll the floor cloth on top of the mat.  Remember, if it is cold, give it a little time to warm up.  Also, any furniture that will be on the floor cloth should have a protective glide cap attached to the bottoms.  This will make it easier to move the furniture around when the floor cloth is in place.

Care and Use
A floor cloth is relatively easy to maintain, requiring only occasional cleaning with mild soap and a damp sponge.  Avoid cleansers that may damage the paint (too gritty or strong chemicals) or those that leave a sticky residue on the surface (such as oil soaps).  An annual rewaxing is recommended to prolong the life of your floor cloth.  After cleaning and drying, apply a thin coat of good quality clear paste wax (this wax appears white in the can and does not affect the colors of the painting) with cheesecloth and buff the surface with a clean soft rag.
  • Do not fold or bend your floor cloth.
  • Do not put your floor cloth in the washing machine.
  • Do not leave your floor cloth outside in the weather or sitting in water.
  • The canvas of the floor cloth will naturally stiffen up in cold weather, but once warmed becomes flexible again.
